ARTISTS' STATEMENT
Nature ties together and weaves through the aesthetic and philosophical realms we inhabit as artists. Our terrain is Northern California: the shores, woods, fields, and gardens. Our studios display evidence of foraging: nests, driftwood, and gnarled roots, as well as discarded household and industrial objects. From these similar entry points in nature, we travel familiar territory toward distinct destinations.
Each process strips away and layers, reveals and perplexes, as we each transform materials, whether wood, bark, wire, steel, aluminum, paper, canvas, paint, or detritus.
The final expressions in sculpture, painting, and printmaking retain traces of our observations, investigations, and dialogues with nature. Among us are long friendships formed in early childhood for Cynthia and Christine, and in post-college years and during a design business partnership for Susan and Christine. Our conversations have informed and encouraged our careers. For each of us, the thematic nest—symbolic and real—resonates in work instinctually crafted to manifest our intentions.
